How to Choose a Factory for Small-Batch Packaging Orders as a Startup? Why Is 500 Pieces So Much More Expensive Than 3,000?

When a startup brand orders custom packaging for the first time, the usual problems are an MOQ that is too high, a unit price that is too expensive and samples that disappoint. Lumepacking has handled many small-batch projects for European and US startups and independent-store sellers; this article summarizes 7 points to watch when choosing a factory.

Lumepacking has handled many small-batch custom projects for European and US startup brands and independent-store sellers. This article summarizes 7 points to watch when choosing a factory.

Small-batch packaging orders: key figures

  • MOQ: Lumepacking's minimum order quantity for custom boxes is 500 pieces.
  • Sampling: 3 days; the sampling fee is deducted when you place the bulk order.
  • Lead time: 15 days of bulk production + about 30–45 days by sea or about 5–10 days by air.
  • Price tiers: about USD 3 per piece at 500, about USD 1 per piece at 1,000, about USD 0.8 per piece at 3,000.

Why small-batch packaging costs more per unit

Every custom package carries fixed costs: printing plates, cutting dies, machine set-up and colour matching, and waste. These costs do not change with quantity.

The fewer pieces, the more fixed cost each package has to carry. That is why the unit price at 500 pieces and at 3,000 pieces can differ a lot, and that is normal.

7 things to watch when a startup chooses a packaging factory

1. Ask about the MOQ first, then talk about design

First confirm whether the factory accepts your quantity, so you do not find out about a mismatch only after the design is finished.

2. Ask for tiered quotes at several quantities

Ask for prices at 3 quantities at the same time, for example 500, 1,000 and 3,000 pieces, and then decide how many to order in the first batch.

3. Confirm the sampling fee and what the sample covers

Ask whether the sample is a white sample (structure only) or a colour sample (to check the printing), and whether the sampling fee is deducted when you place the bulk order.

4. Choose a printing method that suits small batches

Digital printing needs no plates, so it suits small batches and many designs; offset printing suits large batches and gives a lower unit price.

5. Use folding boxes to control cost

Folding boxes ship flat, and their freight and storage costs are lower than those of rigid boxes. We recommend considering them first for a first order.

6. Use fewer finishes and keep one focal point

Hot foil stamping, UV, embossing and specialty paper each add cost. For small-batch orders we recommend keeping just one visual focal point.

7. Confirm the inspection standards and payment method

Before ordering, confirm in writing the inspection standards for colour, dimensional tolerance, glue, outer carton and so on. Lumepacking accepts payment by PayPal or bank transfer.

3 ways to save money on small-batch packaging

Option Approach Suits
Fixed base design One box used for several products, with only the sticker or belly band changing Many products with small quantities each
Standard structure + custom printing Use the factory's existing cutting die and customize only the printing Limited budget, first trial order
Staged upgrade Simple finishing for the first batch, upgrade once sales are stable Product still being validated

Warning signs when choosing a packaging factory

  • They are unwilling to make a sample and ask you to place the bulk order directly.
  • The quote has no breakdown of materials, size and finishing.
  • They will not give a written lead time.
  • An extremely low MOQ with an extremely low unit price may mean an intermediary passing the order on, or downgraded materials.
