Packaging’s New Trend for the AI Era

Packaging with a strong sense of new technology helps your product stand out in the market.

01

Physical Interaction

No electronics required — the interaction comes purely from the packaging's own structural design. For example:

  • Fold, pull-out or flip-open unboxing structures, where the act of opening is itself part of the experience
  • Reusable or transformable packaging — for example, a box that becomes a storage container or a toy after opening
  • Hidden opening mechanisms that create a sense of discovery

The advantage of this category is low cost and no dependency on technology reliability — a clever structure makes customers want to share it, which helps brand exposure.

02

Multi-Sensory Engagement

Engaging the senses beyond sight. For example:

  • Touch: special textures, or thermochromic ink that changes colour when touched or warmed
  • Smell: scent coatings, or fragrance released when the packaging is opened
  • Sound: designed audio cues during unboxing

This category is especially effective for beauty and premium gift packaging, where it reinforces a sense of ritual and prestige. Packaging with emotional value leaves a lasting impression — this is also Lume Packing's guiding principle.

03

AI Digital Integration

NFC, QR codes and AR connect physical packaging to the online world — able to generate data and keep content continuously updated. It is also the only category that can deliver dynamic, one-of-a-kind interaction for every customer:

  • Collect customer information and deliver targeted offers to encourage repeat purchases
  • Update on-package content after production without reprinting
  • Blind-box style packaging, where customers use NFC to reveal a unique image or animated character for each pack

As AI technology accelerates, this is becoming a new trend across the packaging industry.

FAQ

01What is interactive AI packaging, and how is it different from traditional packaging?

Interactive AI packaging is a new packaging concept that emerged in 2025. Unlike traditional packaging, which only handles transport and containment, it embeds AI technology to deliver stronger emotional value and interactivity — helping your packaging stand out among otherwise similar products.

02What's the practical difference between NFC and QR codes on packaging, and which should I choose?

NFC offers a more premium experience with richer functionality than QR codes. A QR code requires the customer to actively scan it, costs less, but can only present text and images. NFC is passive — the customer just brings their phone close to the chip and it triggers automatically, with no extra steps, and customer information is read automatically too. In terms of content, NFC supports not just text and images but also video, virtual characters and interactive exchanges.

03Is interactive packaging only suitable for premium brands, or can small and mid-sized brands use it too?

Any brand or product can use interactive AI packaging — it's especially valuable for brands pursuing creative marketing. Its built-in creativity and interactivity effectively boost brand reach.

04Roughly how much budget does an interactive packaging solution require?

Not much of an increase. Thanks to how mature AI technology has become, the added cost of interactive functionality typically accounts for 5% or less of the total packaging budget — well within an affordable range.

05Will an NFC chip significantly increase my packaging cost?

There is some increase, but it's modest and manageable. Compared with the returns interactive packaging can generate, this added cost delivers strong value — practically negligible by comparison.

06Can small orders (a few hundred pieces) still use interactive packaging?

Yes. We can apply this technology as early as the sampling stage, and we accept small trial orders.

07What data can I get after a customer scans or taps the packaging?

An NFC chip makes this possible, helping collect data on customer preferences and shopping habits.

08Do you produce the interactive content (AR, mini-games, etc.), or do I need to prepare it myself?

Just share your specific requirements — we handle the content production for you.

09Once interactive packaging is live, can the content still be changed later (for example, after a promotion ends)?

Yes. We set up a dedicated back office for you, so the content can be updated on your own afterward.

10Can I run a small-scale test first and decide whether to roll it out more broadly based on the results?

Absolutely. We can trial several different interaction approaches, observe market response, and then tailor an interactive packaging plan to your product category based on the test results.
