In Which Cases Should You Not Choose a Chinese Packaging Factory? China vs Europe: 6-Point Comparison (2026)

Many European and US brands worry about the quality, communication and lead times of Chinese factories when they look for a packaging supplier. Lumepacking is a custom paper packaging factory based in China. This article compares Chinese and local European factories across 6 dimensions, to help you judge which type of order suits which type of factory.

China vs Europe packaging factories: key figures

  • Unit price: for the same custom box at 1,000 pieces, a Chinese quote is about USD 1 per piece and a local European quote about USD 3 per piece. China is roughly one third of the European price.
  • MOQ: Lumepacking's minimum order quantity for custom boxes is 500 pieces.
  • Sampling and production: 3 days for sampling, 15 days for bulk production.
  • Shipping: China to Europe takes about 30–45 days by sea and about 5–10 days by air.
  • Compliance: from 12 August 2026 the PPWR applies to all packaging placed on the EU market. E-commerce packaging may not exceed 40% empty space, regardless of where it is made.

Common concerns about choosing a Chinese packaging factory

Buyers have four main concerns about Chinese factories: inconsistent quality, slow communication, long lead times and poor knowledge of EU regulations.

All four can be addressed by choosing the right factory: check whether it has written inspection standards, an English-speaking contact person, a stage-by-stage lead time, and whether it knows regulations such as the PPWR and CPSC.

Which orders suit a Chinese packaging factory

  • Medium and large orders, where the unit-price difference is amplified.
  • Custom boxes with complex finishing, such as magnetic gift boxes, drawer boxes, irregular structures, and specialty paper with hot foil stamping.
  • Packaging series, such as a fixed base design plus limited holiday editions, that need consistent quality and colour.
  • Orders that can be planned 8–12 weeks ahead.

Which orders suit a local European packaging factory

  • Urgent orders or small top-up runs where there is not enough time for sea freight.
  • Brands whose selling point is "made in the EU" or "locally produced".
  • Very small trial runs with simple finishing.

How to reduce the risk of choosing a Chinese packaging factory

  • Sample first: confirm colour, structure and material, and place the bulk order only after you have signed off the sample.
  • Ask for written inspection standards: colour, glue, structural strength, consistency of printing with the sample, and outer carton.
  • Ask for a stage-by-stage lead time: how many days sampling, production, inspection and shipping each take.
  • Confirm the regulations: for the EU, confirm the PPWR empty-space limit and material requirements; for children's product packaging going to the US, confirm the CPC.
  • Check the factory by video: make sure the other side is the source factory, not a middleman.

How to get started

First decide three things: order quantity, the latest delivery date and the finishing you need. Send these three to Lumepacking and we will give you a full timetable and quote for production in China plus sea freight, so you can compare it with a local factory.
